Stone Sculpture Workshops

Working with stoneKnowing the value of proper training, Lisa is committed to passing on her accumulated knowledge to new stone enthusiasts. “Stone carving is a passion for me and I love helping people see and find all the wonderful shapes and forms in each stone.”

Lisa apprenticed with Atlanta sculptor, Barbara Rheingrover and attended workshops by Bob Lockhart at Arrowmont School of Arts. She has also attained workshops by Amy Brier, Ned Cunningham, Dale Enochs, Jason Lindsey, and Janey Westin while attaining the annual “Limestone Carving Symposia” in Bloomington, Indiana. She has studied from “as many teaching stone sculptors as I could find”.

Kathy Slocum often teams with Lisa as an instructor. Kathy turned to working in stone (after a 26-year career as a potter) when Lisa needed a studio assistant. She pursued further study at Arrowmont School of Arts and Limestone Carving Symposia, also.

Lisa and Kathy worked together for six years as artists-in-residence for the Tennessee public schools. In the program that they created, each student creates their own stone sculpture from start… with a 15-25 lb rough stone… to finish… pinned, polished and signed… ending with a public Art Show.

Working with stone"This stone carving workshop is a truly extraordinary opportunity to learn from not one, but three professionals, each with her own approach to stone," says Perry. "It's rare to find any classes that teach the techniques of traditional carving to let people experience how fabulous it feels to shape rock. And Saugatuck is such an inspirational setting in which to work."

After a short orientation to types of stone, tools and safety issues, students choose from a range of colorful alabaster, limestone or other suitable stone to create sculptures of their own design. Emphasis is on learning traditional techniques (like Michelangelo) but adding the advantages of modern technology (such as power tools). All aspects of stone sculpture are addressed, from conception to finishing, mounting and even marketing. No previous art background is required, but experienced artists will also profit by learning new tricks of the trade.
